Making The Most Of Your Pallets

Hi, I’m Russell, also know as A Pallet Man. Today I am going to write about the nuisance pallets in your workspace or facility yard.

Consider this: those pallets may not be as empty and useless as you think. Sure, they carry weight and can’t move freely like your other items, but there is a lot of space to make use of them. When we stack the pallet on each other we cut off half of the space we could use without any issues.

By stacking the pallets on each other we create a lot of unnecessary space in between.

You can orientate the pallet in many different ways to save a lot of room in your warehouse or storage facility. You have an entire half-pallet for free when you stack it up four high, so instead of going vertically going slanted also gives you more surface area to use (see illustration 1). The only downside is that if you get bigger objects like boxes or crates they might not fit into the given space, but there are still some nice advantages even then: one story high stacked objects leave enough room below them for someone to move around and work freely without having to lift and drag things up and down.

When stacking the pallets on each other vertically leave free space between them as well as on both sides of them.

Alternatively, you can stack the pallets up on their sides which leaves you with big free spaces underneath allowing people to work freely. You could probably put some crates or boxes there too if needed. The only downside is that since one side of your pallet will be facing upwards, it may get dirty over time and need more maintenance than the other way which keeps both sides even.

Pallets stacked sideways leave free space under them as well as on all sides of them.

Finally, if stacking vertically doesn’t fit into your storage area just place two pallets on top of each other horizontally instead. This saves you some room but makes moving things slightly trickier because you have to turn the pallets around to get them into an upright position before you move them. Also, horizontal stacking restricts the amount of storage space at the top.

Try this: Place two pallets on top of each other horizontally to save some room but make moving things slightly trickier and restrict how much can be stored at the top.

These are just some ideas. Some companies have run into the surprise of pallets all over the place. If you have a lot of free space around your stuff then you might not care about clutte here and there.
